Montana Real Estate License Requirements
Sales Associate Pre-License Requirements
To obtain a Montana real estate sales associate license one must successfully complete the required 60 hours of pre-licensing education, have a high school diploma or equivalency, pass the Montana real estate examination with a score of 80% or better on the uniform portion and a 70% or better on the state portion, and fill out the state application.
Broker Pre-License Requirements
To obtain a Montana real estate broker license one must successfully complete the required 60 hours of pre-licensing education, have a high school diploma or equivalency, pass Montana real estate examination with a score of 80% or better on the uniform portion and state portion, and fill out the state application. Individuals seeking to become licensed as brokers are required to have at least two years experience as licensed salespersons. A minimum of 30 residential real estate transactions or 10 commercial, agricultural, or farm and ranch real estate transactions must also be completed with three years of the date of application.
Montana Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements
Every year, twelve (12) clock hours of Real Estate Continuing Education is required.
· Licensees renew on October 31st every year.
· Four (4) of the twelve (12) hours must be mandatory topics. Any of our Montana real estate continuing education courses will meet the mandatory requirements with the exception of the “Real Estate Appraisal of Agents” course.
Immediately upon real estate course completion, the school will provide students with an electronic copy of the course Certificate of Completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five (5) years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Licensees are encouraged to retain copies of their Certificates of Completion in the event that they are audited by the state. Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your Certificate(s) of Completion with your renewal.
Real estate course completions are recorded with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry: Business Standards Division as required once a week on Thursdays. It may take 2-4 business days from the time we report your hours before the Commission updates your license and/or updates their website with the hours. However, we WILL update the Commission by October 31 to meet the coming deadline.
Please enter your individual license number correctly and fully when prompted in the registration process to ensure the reporting of your hours takes place. Montana license numbers should be five (5) digits.
